38 Makers

This weekend, I got to go to the 38 Makers fair. It was quite similar to the Re:MAKE fair I went to a couple months ago, only smaller and less hands-on. The fun part of this one was that it was filled with holiday treats and hosted in the Pinterest office! It was fun to see all of the vendors of jewelry, tote bags, wine, chocolate, pastries, plants, clothing, and more! The details were impeccable, starting with the screen printed advertising posters.

I particularly liked the versatile bags by Aplat, the bags by Lady Alamo, pillows and note cards by note*ify, and a stunning succulent display put on by Urban Farmgirls

One of my favorite parts of the event was getting to see the Pinterest office. It is such a cool space, with a bunch of fun art installations. It is definitely not your typical office space!

Vive La Tarte

It has been a long time since I have done a review...the last one was for souffles at Cafe Jacqueline, I believe. This one is for Vive La Tarte a ridiculously cute coffee and pastry shop that opened up just around the corner from us! I can't believe it hasn't been discovered yet--the food is amazing and the space is gorgeous!

I think the best part is the huge open kitchen. You can watch artisan bakers making all the treats, and enjoy your selections as delicious aromas emerge from their ovens! The second best part is just how much there is to choose from :)

We chose the white mushroom, arugula, and truffle oil focaccia and an Earl Grey filled donut. Both were fantastic! I was scared the donut would be too sweet, but the filling was hardly sweet at all. I can't wait to go back, and I hope you try it out too!

RE: MAKE

I went to the Re:Make festival in San Francisco today. It was a super cute event hosted by Brit + Co, with booths by over 100 makers. We got to browse through stunning jewelry, hand bags, shoes, chocolate, soaps, stationary, and much much more! I had so much fun browsing through all of the amazing designs!

My favorite was jewelry by ORU. Agnieszka Zoltowski, the maker, incorporates woven sets of tiny glass beads into each of her stunning pieces.

They had a bunch of interactive and DIY booths too. For example, a large coloring book wall--so many crayons :)

I really enjoyed the make-your-own facial scrub stand with honey, salt, and almond-grapeseed oil, as well a homemade greeting card stand where you could send a friend well-wishes. The also had an area where you could decorate tote bags with rubber stamps. I made my own bird stamp for my tote. It was a great day that brought back a lot of great memories of childhood backyard arts and crafting. It has been ages since I last played with crayons, rubber stamps, and random concoctions, but apparently, my love for all that hasn't diminished a bit.

Souffle Sunday

The perfect end to our Sunday was dinner with our friends A & F at the famed Cafe Jacqueline, in the North Beach part of San Francisco. The French bistro is known for its souffles, both savory and sweet. The souffles are HUGE, and literally a work of art! The staff is super sweet and helpful--they gave us a bunch of recommendations on what to order, and a trip to the adorable kitchen gives you the opportunity to meet Chef Jacqueline herself in the midst of the wonderful aromas from her magical baking cove. Cafe Jacqueline was one of Steve Jobs's favorite restaurants (I totally see why), and he had his non-alcoholic bachelor party there!

The best part of the evening was dessert! It was very difficult to choose just one, but in the end we went with a chocolate souffle--a light, fluffy, and decadent masterpiece!

Thank you so much A & F for suggesting this place, and for the fabulous company :)

18 Reasons to cook

My team recently had an offsite at 18 Reasons, a community cooking school that teaches cooking and healthy eating classes to various groups in the community, particularly lower income groups and kids. They have a super chic space in the Mission in SF, and are a part of the Bi-Rite family. We were treated to a special cooking class, where we learned how to make two salads, a fish or portobello mushroom entree, and a stuffed dates dessert.

The first salad was a root vegetable mix, including shaved beets, turnips, carrots, and fennel. I learned to use a mandolin for the first time, and loved the idea of presenting an entirely "shaved salad". The salad also included chickpeas and the fennel leaves. We made a roasted cumin dressing for this one: after roasting full cumin seeds on pan on the stove, we ground them using an old-school mortar and pestle. We mixed the powder with olive oil and lemon juice. It was amazing!

The second salad was more traditional, lettuce, radicchio, avocado, parsley, and dill, topped with roasted hazelnuts, shaved Parmesan, lemon slices, and a honey mustard vinaigrette.

We made the entree in a cute little parchment paper pouch that we baked. We placed our entree (mine was a mushroom) over a bed of swiss chard (I learned to chiffonade!), semi-boiled purple potatos, turnips, and a slice of lemon. We wrapped the whole thing up in the parchment paper, and tied with string. We baked the pouches for about 20 minutes, and then served directly in the cute pouches.

Last, we combined cream cheese, creme fraiche, vanilla extract, and orange zest together, piped the mixture into halved dried dates, and topped with powdered pistachios for a delicious dessert! We didn't have to sweeten the filling at all because the dates were so sweet.

Here are my 18 reasons, in no particular order. What are yours?
1. It's relaxing
2. It's lab science for the ex-experimentalist in me
3. It's healthy
4. It's price conscious
5. It's an art--both in the recipes and the plating
6. There is always more to learn, try, and achieve
7. It makes your whole house smell yummy
8. It never comes out the same way twice
9. It's fun to share with others--the recipes, the process, and the product
10. It's a non-sedentary activity, unlike most of everything else in our lives
11. The result can appeal to all 5 senses
12. Your mom's food is the ultimate goal, but not one you will achieve
13. It's a creative project that you actually finish (I have tons of unfinished paintings, and embroideries, and crafts)
14. It's the "fun chore" that trumps all others (much rather cook than do the laundry or bathrooms)
15. You feel accomplished each time
16. Everyone loves to be cooked for--it's the best gift
17. If you are the chefs, you always get to put your favorites on the menu
18. It's delicious!

I highly recommend that you check 18 Reasons out...be it for a cooking lesson, their Thursday evening cafes (18th hour, 6:00-10:00p), to volunteer, or to donate to their great cause!

(Special thanks to my friend TC for all the pictures in this post...typical me showed up to the class with no battery power left in my phone)
